About the Edition

Many cities provide park-and-ride facilities to alleviate congestion at downtown areas. A thorough understanding of the vehicle dynamics within such facilities will benefit both transportation planners in travel demand forecasting and designers in evaluating facility layouts. This thesis presents a microscopic park-and-ride simulation model using the Cellular Automata (CA) approach. Different techniques of CA applications in traffic and pedestrian modelling are analyzed and applied in the study. The park-and-ride model is composed of five fundamental components. These components together simulate a variety of driver actions such as making parking choice decisions and steering control of vehicles. With Kipling South lot as the testing site, the morning period traffic is simulated. The model is able to generate a realistic simulation of vehicle dynamics within the facility and reasonable values of travel time and parking occupation trends. Two different parking lot designs are also compared using the simulation results.
